The words spoken long ago by a veteran actor on a TV show still remain in my memory.

The actor shared that it has become harder to focus on acting with young actresses due to ‘beauty lenses’ (lenses with color in the center or the edges to make the pupil seem bigger) they put on for beauty purposes.

This implies that acting has become harder since one cannot read the emotions from the eyes when it is important to focus on the other actor’s emotions.

 

Besides the purpose of vision, our eyes have also been compared to and referred as a ‘frame’ which is used to share our emotions.

However, beauty lenses that have recently started to gain popularity have become a cosmetic tool which increases outer beauty at the expense of sacrificing not only the emotional communication between people but also the eye health.

 

CARD 1. ‘If your body is worth 1000, your eyes are worth 900’

Of all the body organs, eyes are the most sensitive and exposed to the outside forces and receive oxygen and nutrition from fresh air and tears.

As claimed by this saying, ‘if your body is worth 1000, your eyes are worth 900,’ your eyes are very important and stress, tiredness, and health problems can be seen right away in the eyes.

Because eyes cannot be recovered to the original state if they become bad once, you have to be diligent in maintaining your eye health in the daily life.

 

CARD 2. Tears are essential for eye health!

As there is a tear film to the front of the cornea and conjunctiva, the tears that drop from this film make the eyes soft and prevent dryness.

Furthermore, due to their sterilization function, tears protect the eyes from external germs and harmful materials. Thus, tears are essential for the eye health.

 

CARD 3. Beauty lenses are for beauty purpose rather than eyesight adjustment

Beauty lenses are released as various types such as color lens, tear lens, and circle lens in order to make the eyes clearer and prettier for beauty purposes rather than to adjust the eye sight.

Beauty lenses that are produced with colors and the desired shapes can be easily bought at ordinary stores, optician stores, and even online.

Since the situation is as it is, beauty lenses have become a necessary item as much as color cosmetics to teenagers who care much about their looks.

Moreover, since teenagers are usually limited in budget, they have no choice but to buy cheap beauty contact lenses.

 

CARD 4. Beauty lenses which hinder the supply of oxygen!

Beauty lenses consist of two lens put together and because color dye is placed between these two lens, beauty lenses are thicker than normal contact lenses. Therefore, the transmission rate of oxygen is significantly lower.

The cornea is transparent, requires a certain thickness to be maintained, and contains no blood vessels. Hence, it receives the needed oxygen supply directly from the air.

 

CARD 5. Further cause of other eye diseases

However, if there is oxygen deficit due to beauty lenses covering up the cornea surface,

corneal neovascular disease can arise. This disease is when blood vessels from in the cornea, causing the transparent cornea to become opaque and thus the eyesight to become blurry.

Furthermore, low transmission rate of oxygen becomes the direct cause of eye dryness and diverse eye diseases.

 

CARD 6. Beauty lenses can even lead to loss of sight?

A bigger concern is the ‘synthetic basic dye’ that fills up the gap between the lenses. Although the dye is of a very small amount, it can melt into the tears and in the worst case scenario, move into the body tissues and cause unexpected side effects.

Thus, using beauty contact lenses simply for beauty purpose is a very dangerous move to make.

Furthermore, lenses of cheap materials have rough surfaces, thereby increasing the risk of corneal damage.

This leads to wounds in the cornea, establishing an environment vulnerable to germ intrusion and therefore, various types of inflammation.

The dye that makes up the color directly irritates the cornea to instigate inflammation and corneal ulcer and if this persists, even loss of sight can occur.

 

CARD 7. The need to pay closer attention to teenage eye care

 

In particular, adolescents who have not finished their growth in eyes must pay more attention and be more aware of beauty lenses.

Therefore, it is a given that adults should pay more attention, companies be more socially responsible, and the distribution method be understandable.

Along with this measure, there is also a need for celebrities to decrease the use beauty lenses as it is easy for teenagers to follow such trend.
